CSM Brunk Conley

Command Sergeant Major (Retired) Brunk W. Conley began his military career in 1982 at Fort Benning as an Infantryman and Airborne graduate. He served in the 2-75 Ranger Regiment at Fort Lewis, progressing from rifleman to team leader and instructing in the Ranger Indoctrination Program.

He later joined the Oregon Army National Guard, serving in multiple infantry units and advancing through leadership roles including Platoon Sergeant, First Sergeant, and Command Sergeant Major. In 2003, as the CSM for 2-162 Infantry, he deployed to Baghdad for Operation Iraqi Freedom II.

Selected as the 41st IBCT CSM in 2005, he supported Hurricane Katrina relief operations and later deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan, where the brigade led Combined Joint Task Force Phoenix V and trained Afghan security forces.

In 2008, he became the Oregon State CSM, serving as the senior enlisted advisor to the Adjutant General. In 2012, he assumed duties as the 10th CSM of the Army National Guard, advising the Director on Soldier policies, working closely with the Sergeant Major of the Army, and participating in national councils and advisory boards. He also supported the National Guard Pre-Ranger Program to maintain its high standards and success rate.

Retiring in 2017, his awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, and numerous state and federal honors. His qualifications include the Ranger Tab, Senior Parachutist Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Expert Infantryman’s Badge, and Combat Infantryman’s Badge.

A former high school chemistry and physics teacher, he was named Educator of the Year in 1997. He holds a BA in Education from Western Oregon University and an MA in Political Science from American Military University.

Inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame in 2024, he now serves as CEO of Conco Consulting, Conco Properties, and Conco Investments. He also sits on the North Santiam School Board. Brunk and his wife Laura have been married for 40 years and have five sons and three grandchildren.
